School-Based Mental Health Navigator

Program Description

Members will serve in middle and high schools through Communities In Schools (CIS) and work with students at risk of dropping out. Members will be integrated members of the school community and part of the larger CIS support team on each campus, and offer case management through weekly one-on-one or small group sessions to economically disadvantaged students.

These sessions will focus on six core components of the CIS program:

  • Supportive guidance and counseling
  • Health and human services
  • Parent and family engagement
  • College and career readiness
  • Enrichment
  • Academic support

Certification Pathways

As a Texas Youth Mental Health Corps Member, you’ll have the opportunity to enter a mental health career path through one certification pathway:

School-Based Mental Health Navigator

Members will earn stackable credentials and/or credits toward a higher education program as they serve in schools, out-of-school-time programs, and community-based youth organizations in communities with limited access to mental health services.

Essential qualifications to participate in the Texas Youth Mental Health Corps

Must be 18 - 24 years old at start of service

Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Must pass a criminal history check

04

Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Legal Permanent Resident

Member Benefits

While all Youth Mental Health Corps members have access to a variety of professional support, financial, and personal supports, Texas members will have access to:

Segal AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used to pay for current and future educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs or repay qualified student loans

Access to youth mental health training, career exploration, and peer networking opportunities

Training Opportunities

Texas Youth Mental Health Corps AmeriCorps members will receive trainings within a school-based mental health navigator framework, including:

  • AmeriCorps Training Requirements
  • Case-Management & Supportive Guidance Services
  • Trauma Informed Care & Mental Health Awareness
  • Professional Skills Development

Additionally, members will earn one or more of the following certifications:

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid
  • AS+K Suicide Prevention Certification
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
